Serving as curator, I cordially invite you to the exhibition in public space CIRCUMSPECTIO at the train station Köln Messe/Deutz:
Köln Messe/Deutz
Ottoplatz 7
50679 Cologne
Cologne was the starting point for Heinz Breloh’s (1940, Hilden – 2001, Cologne) artistic development. From the early 1970s onwards, he was part of an experimental Cologne art scene that was exploring new forms of artistic practice and outreach. As a co-founder of the magazine ‘nummer’ and the exhibition forum ‘depot’, Breloh actively helped shape this new era and contributed to Cologne’s development as an internationally significant art hub.
To coincide with this year’s Art Cologne, the exhibition ‘Circumspectio’ brings his work back into the city’s public space and once again highlights his central position within Cologne’s art history. The exhibition features exclusively sculptures created during his years in Cologne.
The title ‘Circumspectio’, Latin for ‘viewing from different angles’, refers to Breloh’s sculptural working method and simultaneously articulates the curatorial concept. In his sculptural works, the body itself becomes a tool through direct contact. The sculptor shaped the material with his entire body, the spatial extent of which defined the boundaries of the sculpture. The sculpture can thus be understood as a negative mould of his movements, as a trace of a physical action in space, which in turn only reveals itself through movement and the work itself.
The exhibition conveys this idea: Breloh’s sculptures appear graphically isolated against monochrome colour fields, as well as from different angles on various supports in and around Köln Messe/Deutz train station. It is only whilst moving through passageways, stairwells, platforms and the station forecourt that individual perspectives come together to form a conception of a three-dimensional body. Whilst Breloh circled the sculpture during the creative process and shaped it by engaging his entire body, this relationship is, in a sense, reversed here. The viewers are in transit, whilst the work reveals itself to them step by step through changing views.
